Apple’s iPhone 7 may feature a thinner waterproof body with no headphone jack

Apple’s next iPhone 7 may feature wireless charging and a thinner waterproof body with no headphone jack, according to a new report from Fast Company that is in line with previous iPhone 7 rumors from the Asian supply chain.

The report also states that Apple will be able to make the iPhone 7 thinner than the iPhone 6s by sacrificing the 3.5mm headphone jack. It’s already not a secret that Apple has thinner devices than the iPhone 6s with a 3.5mm headphone jack, so this element seems like a moot point. However, it’s one element of these rumors that refuses to go away.. The device will also “very likely” be waterproof and support some form of wireless charging.

Apple is said to be working with Cirrus Logic to adapt the audio chipset in the iPhone to work with the Lightning port. With no 3.5mm headphone jack, the Lightning port, which is currently used for charging, will also be used to transmit sound to wired headphones. The chipset may also include new noise-canceling technology to remove background noise during music playback and phone calls.

Some media reports have suggested that Apple will include a set of Lightning-connected EarPod earphones in the box with the iPhone 7. It’s more likely, our source says, that Apple will sell a more expensive pair of noise-canceling, Lightning-connected, earphones or headphones separately—possibly under its Beats brand.

Wireless charging will reportedly also make its debut on the iPhone 7, after years of the technology being available on other platforms. According to the report, Apple tried it out in two previous versions of the iPhone, but it didn’t pan out. Unfortunately, it’s not known if Apple plans on utilizing a proprietary technology to harness wireless charging for its iPhone 7, or if Apple will use a broader standard which would allow folks to use already-owned wireless charging devices if they have them.

The report also echoes that the iPhone 7 will be waterproof. However, the source says that both waterproofing elements and wireless charging could be left out of the final design.

Out of all the rumors so far, what are you most hoping turns out to be true in the iPhone 7?
