In August of 2015, Twitter officially bumped up the character limit of its Direct Message feature to 10,000. Now some other changes might be in store for the social network.
The change to make DMs have a 10,000 character limit has apparently gone well for Twitter, as according to a report from Re/code, that change could be making the leap to standard tweets at some point in the future. The report states that Twitter has a team working on a project called “Beyond 140,” and that the sole reason for its existence is to bump up the character limit for standard tweets, well, beyond 140 characters.
“Twitter is building a new feature that will allow users to tweet things longer than the traditional 140-character limit, and the company is targeting a launch date toward the end of Q1, according to multiple sources familiar with the company’s plans. Twitter is currently considering a 10,000 character limit, according to these sources.”
Perhaps introducing the 10,000-character limit will help increase engagement on Twitter as people who post on Medium, Google+ and other blogging platforms might consider re-posting their articles on Twitter in their entirety.
It would seem that the company is thinking the same because they’re reportedly working out a plan for how to deal with potential spamming issues that might arise with an expanded character count, according to Re/Code.
