A week and a day after releasing the first golden master following its September 7 event, Apple has released a second version of the GM to registered developers. The golden master represents the final version of macOS Sierra that will be released to the public on Tuesday, September 20.
MacOS will be the official re-branding of the Mac’s operating system from OS X to macOS for the very first time, which puts the Mac on par with other OS naming schemes, such as iOS, watchOS, and tvOS.
Of course, the name isn’t the only thing that’s big with macOS Sierra, the update also comes with a slew of new features, including:
- Siri officially coming to the Mac
- Auto unlock with Apple Watch
- Apple Pay support
- Universal clipboard and tabs
- Your documents everywhere, via iCloud
- Picture-in-Picture
- Storage management
- Improvements to the Photos app
- New features in the Messages app
- Added features to Apple Music
- and more…
All Macs manufactured post-2009 can run macOS Sierra. Those include:
- MacBook (Late 2009 or newer)
- MacBook Pro (Mid 2010 or newer)
- MacBook Air (Late 2010 or newer)
- Mac mini (Mid 2010 or newer)
- iMac (Late 2009 or newer)
- Mac Pro (Mid 2010 or newer)
The upgrade can be done right from the Mac App Store for free. The following requirements must be met to install macOS Sierra:
- OS X 10.7.5 or later
- 2GB of memory
- 8.8GB of available storage
- Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.
- Some features require a compatible Internet service provider; fees may apply.
macOS Sierra will be officially released to the public on September 20 and it will be available for free to all users with a compatible Mac.
