TvOS 9 Jailbreak for the new Apple TV 4G to be released next week by Pangu Team

In a surprising development Team Pangu has released the updated version of their jailbreak tool, which is now capable of untethered jailbreaking iOS 9.1, The same team has now announced on Twitter that they will also release a jailbreak by next week for the fourth generation of Apple TV running tvOS 9.0 or 9.0.1. The last time that we saw a jailbreak for Apple TV was around three years ago.

Although the team notes that this jailbreak will only provide SSH access (no UI) and be geared towards security researchers and jailbreak developers. With that said, this should still be considered as a good news as it opens the door for new modifications and improvements to the Apple TV. For instance, jailbreak developers could provide a way for users to theme the interface of Apple TV apart from enjoying new features.

As noted by the Pangu team, this jailbreak will only work on Apple TV running tvOS 9.0 or 9.0.1. The current firmware version of tvOS is 9.1.1, and because the device is by default set to automatically download and update to the latest software when available, it seems a lot of people (yours truly included) might be out of luck here.

If you’re not sure which firmware version your Apple TV is running then simply head over to your Apple TV general settings and check the current version of your firmware. If you see 9.0 or 9.0.1, then congratulations. If you see 9.1 or 9.1.1, then you’ll have to sit that one out.

What kind of tweaks would you like to see for the Apple TV? Make sure to let us know in the comments section.
